Create Synchronicity - Fast, light and simple backup and synchronization tool

Presentation

Create Synchronicity logo

Create Synchronicity is an opensource application developed in VB.NET to synchronize files and folders and create backups.

It aims at making the synchronization process as easy as possible, and yet remains fully customizable.

Create Synchronicity is especially light: zipped, it weights less than 80kB, ie. less than a fifth of Yahoo's Home Page. Unzipped, the application itself is less than 170kB, again beating Yahoo's home page.

Great! Go to the download page !

Example

Checked clean by SoftPedia Gigabeat F player running RockBox

Suppose you have an MP3 player (say, running Rockbox), on which you want to synchronize you music. Suppose you download covers, add music, modify file tags frequently.

It will be no fun to try remembering everything you modified and then use the wonderful Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V repeatedly, or worse, copy everything back and forth every time you change a single file. Nope, you need a powerful syncing solution.

Well, that's pretty much what Create Synchronicity is : an easy solution to backup, synchronize, and copy files from one place to another. I designed Create Synchronicity because everything I had tried before had problems with some things I wanted to do. Some applications, for example, wouldn't let me choose which filetypes were to be included, or excluded. Some others would crash, because my musical library is quite huge (60 GB). Sometimes, I just didn't like the interface.

That's why I designed Create Synchronicity. To make things simple and still, highly customizable - in a friendly way.

If you don't like it, that's great: do tell me about it ; it will allow me to fix everything you didn't like.

How about an option to run one or more sync-tasks when the computer starts up? You could simply let the user add a shortcut in his startmenu with the parameter: '/run:[profilename]'

Is this a good way to synchronise my documents folder (incl pictures, mp3s and spreadsheets etc, about 5GB total) between home machines or should I use windows live sync? Thanks

If your computers are directly connected, you can use this soft very easily. I tested it myself and it works very well.

Create Synchronicity is light, fast and simple. It is portable : you can run the binary file (.exe which weights less than 170 Ko) from a mobile device such as a USB key or an external hard drive. Portability is only limited by its requirement for Microsoft .NET framework 2.0 or later. Its one-way mirror function (with options for selecting sub-directories, file types and more) is very useful for maintaining up-to-date copies (mirror backups). I tested this function thoroughly, I now use it for daily backups. From its 2.1 version this software solves the difficult issue of synchronization between NTFS and FAT32 file systems. Also, I found the author very cooperative and willing to improve its software. Very nice piece of work indeed. Thanks a lot.
